Caring for your introvert →
This Atlantic article is not even nearly new, but I like to re-read it periodically. It’s helpful in reminding me that although I may be weird, introversion isn’t inherently so. Sending it to extroverted friends is maybe a little aggressive for me, but this quote is so very good:
“I’m an introvert. You are a wonderful person and I like you. But now please shush.”

Ever. And that’s saying something. For real, Supreme Court? This looks like a joke, a fake website spoofing on the .gov urls. Is having your website be nearly impossible to navigate really the goal? Really?

These are rad. Whatever your feelings on cigarettes, you can’t deny they have great packaging and design.
I wish there were a few more options on authors, but I’ll probably get the Hemingway, and maybe Kafka just for the packaging. Oh, I love little books.

make. this. now.
I made this for dinner the other night, and wow. Divine. It is: spaghetti with broccoli rabe, toasted garlic and bread crumbs. And it is amazing. And really easy to make. One recommended change though: add the bread crumbs at the very last minute, once the pasta and broccoli are in the bowl. Stir them in then, otherwise they’ll get soggy. I also used rigatoni instead of spaghetti. It was...

I love to cook, you see, and when recipes call for fresh rosemary, or thyme, or such, I’m reluctant to buy those packets you find at grocery stores, both because they are overpriced and because I almost never use all of it. And fresh food going to waste makes me very unhappy.
I grew my own basil this summer on my windowsills, and it was divine.
But I just moved to a (lovely) new...

I want to live in David Byrne's brain
I saw the man himself in concert last night in Philadelphia. I’d never seen him live before, and hot damn! He is amazing. The whole group was wearing white, to perfectly match his shock of white hair.
He played a bunch of songs from the new album (Everything That Happens Will Happen Today), as well as some songs from My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (a previous collaboration with Brian...

Goddamn, but I love art history.
Not so much this semester’s class, though. It was full of lazy-ass freshmen who clearly were just taking it as a requirement and were happy to coast by with the lowest passing grade. Not inspiring, and as a result of that, the assignments weren’t either. But I liked the professor.
All that aside; studying for this final has been a joy, and I can’t ever recall saying that...
So much awesome at the White House Correspondents Dinner.
Obama’s speech kicked ass and he surprisingly has seriously good comedic timing.
But oh, Wanda Sykes. She mercilessly roasts the GOP. Almost too over-the-top for Washington is my guess, but I thought it was awesome. You could see Obama really trying not to laugh at some of her more pointed jokes.
It’s a far cry from the Bush...

The Nietzsche Family Circus →
Take a quote by Nietzsche, add a randomized Family Circus cartoon and we have something greater than the sum of its parts.
For the record, I’ve never read Nietzsche, but I can’t think of a better way to absorb him than this.
Some photos that have been making me dreamy lately.
The photographer is a Seattle artist, and I’m not quite comfortable linking to her Flickr, because these photos are from her personal albums. I feel like I’m invading her privacy here, although nothing on the internet is truly private. Nevertheless, I think I’ll just leave you to enjoy the photos.
Mr. Rogers is love
A Ms. Holly Yarbrough has come out with a delightful album called Mister Rogers Swings! It’s full of jazzy covers of classic Mr. Rogers songs, such as “Won’t You Be My Neighbor.” That one is a must-buy if you have even a little nostalgia for Mr. Rogers.

if the world could collectively get over it when it comes to Michelle Obama’s fashion choices. Yes, she has a fabulous sense of style. Yes, I covet some of her clothes. Yes, she’s undeniably lovely.
But she’s also a Harvard educated lawyer and a dedicated public servant who spent over a decade working to benefit her Chicago community. She is a force in her own right, with or...
Evolution of an inspired book cover
That would be Columbine by Dave Cullen. This blog post by the designer Henry Sene Yee goes over the evolution of the cover from the unpolished ideas to the lovely finished product:
This cover is incredibly well executed. Because really, what more is there to say visually when it comes to a book called Columbine? To create something intricate would simply be overwrought. We all know the...
